Breakfast Television Burger Battle, Day 2: Boogie’s Burgers, Calgary
WATCH the Boogie’s video recap on BT’s site.
Time:
7:20 am. Breakfast of gluttons. Or the indecisive, who can’t decide between a hot dog or a hamburger.
Judges: Me (the newly minted Metro Calgary Lunch Rush columnist), Cheap Eats author and critic John Gilchrist, Kitchen Scraps author and illustrator Pierre Lamielle.
Criteria: 5 points each for Taste, Presentation, Value.
Eats: Jebb’s Doggie burger, named after former Breakfast Television host and standup comedian, Jebb Fink. The burger consists of: one patty (we added a second), cheddar, bacon, 100% all beef weiner, Boogie’s signature red sauce, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, pickles on the side. Unlike at Five Guys’, extra bacon and extra cheese costs more here.
Scoring: Tune in to BT Calgary on Friday May 13th for the burger battle winner. Results will also be posted here thereafter.

Back row: Boogies owners Noel, Kipp, Jill Belland. Front row: Pierre Lamielle, Anh Chu, John Gilchrist, Citytv camera supernova and secret judge, Nick Blakeney.

Thoughts: Toasted and heavily-sesame-d bun: check. Burger circumference: nearly the size of my head (I do like that the burger is spread out though). Caloric intake: more than anyone should experience immediately upon waking. This burger contains shredded lettuce, aka, the bane of my existence; however, the slice of real cheddar cheese compensated for this fact. The top bun and the bottom bun are the same width which means burger can be eaten without turning upside down. First bite has a ‘wow’ factor that deserves an affirmative head nod. The hot dog adds a great, chewy texture and nice flavour. All of Boogie’s burgers come with a knife in case your “hands are small, I know” (terrible Jewel reference notwithstanding). Your fingers are the fork. Or, you can ask the staff for a fork.

This time we didn’t receive a tour. Instead, we “cleansed our palate” with a pickled egg that reminded me of how as a child, I’d soak an egg in vinegar for a few weeks until the whole thing, shell and all, rubberized into an egg “ball”. I digress.

Then we washed everything down with amazing milkshakesmaple bacon, peanut butter and raspberry jam, and Angry Aztec–of which the PBJ won hands-down for its strong peanut butter flavour. Prior to today, I cannot tell how you how many effusive exhortations I’ve heard along the lines of, “you have to try Boogie’s!” Too many. Perhaps these people are onto something.

Tomorrow (Wed), the judges are off to Burger Inn, another Calgary institution. To watch, tune in to Breakfast Television Calgary from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Happy eating!
-Anh Chu

  1. The burger with the hotdog looks delicious and by the way, you look great on TV! I could also use a cold milkshake right now.

  2. My hands smelled like burger for days after eating at Boogie’s, a feat rivaled only by Holy Smoke’s ribs.

  3. hahaha the ribs at Holy Smokes were OK…I never have cravings for them and you know something is good when you crave for it afterwards, or during.
